In 2015, Argentina’s National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) launched a National Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy Plan, which led to the creation of Latin America’s first proton therapy center—the Argentine Proton Therapy Center (CeArP).
Located in Buenos Aires, CeArP is a collaboration between CNEA, the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), and the Ángel H. Roffo Oncology Institute. Partnering with the Nuclear Diagnostic Center Foundation (FCDN) and the renowned Pediatric Hospital “Prof. Dr. Juan P. Garrahan,” CeArP aims to provide cutting-edge, patient-centered cancer treatment.
CNEA entrusted INVAP, Argentina’s state-owned high-tech company, to oversee the project, with Belgian firm IBA supplying the Proteus Plus proton therapy system. CeArP will feature two pencil beam scanning (PBS) treatment rooms and a clinical-grade research facility to advance proton therapy applications.
The center spans 8,000 square meters across four levels, integrating advanced radiotherapy technologies. Alongside treatment, CeArP houses LAIDEP, a dedicated Proton Therapy Research and Development Laboratory, fostering innovation and training the next generation of oncologists, physicists, and radiobiologists.
Now in its final construction phase, CeArP positions Argentina as a regional leader in proton therapy, offering world-class cancer treatment and groundbreaking research opportunities.
